Perjalanan ini dibuat pada 4 November lalu. Saya pun tak pasti jika saya pernah menaiki bukit ini walaupun semasa kecil dahulu, sebelum wujud lebuhraya Utara-Selatan PLUS, saya selalu melalui kawasan kaki bukit ini setiap kali dalam perjalanan dari Muar (kampung ibu saya) ke Kuala Lumpur dan sebaliknya.
This trip was made last 4th November. I myself am not sure if I ever climbed up this hill although when I was small, before the PLUS North-South highway existed, I always passed through its foothill everytime on the trip from Muar (my mother's hometown) to Kuala Lumpu and vice versa.
Apapun, saya ingin menghilangkan keraguan ini. Maka pada satu hari yang terang, selepas bermalam di Pulau Besar, Melaka, saya dan seorang kawan pergi ke Bukit Cina lalu menaikinya untuk melihat apa yang ada...
Whatever, I want to clear the doubts. So on one fine day, after spending a night in Pulau Besar, Melaka, me and a friend went to Bukit Cina and climbed up to see what's there...
Dalam perjalanan, kami ternampak binaan-binaan kenit ini...
Along the way, we saw this miniature thingies...
Lihat... Model kenit bangunan-bangunan binaan Belanda yang terdapat di bandar Melaka... Lupa pula namanya. Melihat ini, saya terus bergurau dengan kawan... "Di sini adalah tempat duduk orang-orang kenit!" kata saya... Tak sangka pula apabila balik ke Kuala Lumpur malam nanti, kami terjumpa gambar orang kenit yang diambil secara tidak sengaja semasa berada di Pulau Besar! Sila lihat Liliputian midget in Pulau Besar, Melaka!
Look... Miniature models of Dutch buildings available in Melaka city... Forgot the name. Looking at this, I immediately joked to the friend... "Here is a place where midgets stay!" I said. Who would have thought upon returning to Kuala Lumpur that night, we found a picture of a midget accidently snapped while at Pulau Besar! Have a look at Liliputian midget in Pulau Besar, Melaka!

Di atas ada semacam dataran menghadap bandaraya Melaka. Ada sebuah petanda yang menyebut tentang sejarah bukit ini bermula abad ke 19 Masihi. Saya tidak ingat butiran tepatnya tetapi ia ada menyebut tentang bukit ini menjadi kepunyaan persatuan Cina tertentu. Sebab itu terdapat banyak kubur-kubur personaliti penting daripada persatuan ini.
On top was a kind of plateu overlooking the city of Melaka. There is a plaque saying something about the history of the hill starting in the 19th Century AD. I don't remember the exact details but it did mention something about the hill belonging to a certain Chinese association. That's why there's so many graves there belonging to major personalities from the association.
Pada saya pula ada sesuatu yang tak kena. Setahu saya bukit ini diberi nama Bukit Cina kerana dianugerahkan Sultan Mansur Shah (kalau tak salah saya memerintah Melaka sekitar tahun 1420-1430 Masihi) kepada para pengikut dari Cina yang mengiringi Puteri Hang Li Po. Puteri kepada Maharaja Cina ini dikatakan telah masuk Islam lalu berkahwin dengan Sultan Melaka lalu para pengikutnya turut masuk Islam.
For me, there's something not right here. As far as I know, the hill was named Bukit (hill of) Cina (China) because it was granted by Sultan (king) Mansur Shah (ruled Melaka around 1420-1430 AD if I'm not mistaken) to the followers from Cina who accompanied Princess Hang Li Po. The Princess of a Chinese emperor was said to have embraced Islam and married the Sultan of Melaka and so the followers too embraced Islam.
Ini adalah cerita yang diterima ramai sepertimana yang tercatit dalam kitab Sulalatus Salatin atau Sejarah Melayu yang dikarang Bendahara Tun Sri Lanang abad ke 17 Masihi. Saya pula ada sebab tersendiri untuk percaya bahawa Puteri Hang Li Po dan para pengikutnya memang penganut Islam! Ini kerana Cina zaman itu berada di bawah pemerintahan Dinasti Ming dan saya ada sebab untuk percaya para pemerintah serta bangsawan dinasti ini beragama Islam walaupun rakyatnya mungkin bukan.
This is the story accepted by many as written in the book Sulalatus Salatin or the Malay Annals authored by Bendahara (something like the Prime Minister) Tun Sri Lanang in the 17th Centurt AD. I on the other hand have a certain reason to believe that Princess Hang Li Po and her entourage were already Muslims! This is because Cina then was under the rule of the Ming Dynasty and I have reason to believe that the rulers and nobles of the dynasty were Muslims although the subjects might not be.
Apapun, sepatutnya mesti ada banyak kesan kuburan Islam di Bukit Cina tetapi nampaknya tidak kelihatan lagi. Apakah yang telah berlaku? Apakah ia termasuk dalam sejarah Melayu yang cuba dipadamkan pihak tertentu?
Whatever, there should be many remains of Muslim graves at Bukit Cina but it seems there's none to be seen. What happened? Is it among pieces of Malay history that wants to be erased by certain parties?
Nasib baik ada juga kesan Islam di Bukit Cina tetapi di kaki bukit. Nampak tak masjid di bahagian bawah gambar ini? Di sebelah terdapat beberapa kuburan lama Islam.
Thank God there's some remains of Islam at Bukit Cina but at the foothills. Can you see the mosque at the bottom of the picture? Next to it are some ancient Muslim graves.
Selain memliki banyak kuburan Cina, Bukit Cina menjadi tempat untuk ramai warga Cina bersenam dan membuat aktiviti rekreasi...
Beside having many Chinese graves, Bukit Cina is a place for many Chinese citizens to exercise and do recreational activities...
Tujuan sebenar saya menziarahi Bukit Cina adalah untuk mencari kubur seorang pahlawan Melayu yang dikatakan wujud di situ. Malangnya saya tidak menjumpainya... Siapakah pahlawan ini? Nanti saya akan sebut dalam satu cerita di blogspot CATATAN SI MERAH SILU ya. Sekian!
My actual reason for visiting Bukit Cina is to look for the tomb of a Malay warrior said to exist there. Too bad I couldn't find it... Who is this warrior? I will mention it in a story in the blogspot CATATAN SI MERAH SILU ya. That's all!
