This is an old Aceh monument known as the Gunongan...
It is part of a garden built for a princess from Pahang who became the wife to Sultan Iskandar Muda (ruled Aceh 1607-1636), a princess who is known in Aceh as Putro Phang.
The entrance...
Before that let's have a look at this building which in old times was complete with a water fountain. This is the place where Putro Phang used to enjoy a wash or take bath with her maids before going out to play while lying out in the sun at Gunongan!
OK. Now only do we go in...
Have to enter this tunnel-like part...
Then climb up this staircase to go out...
Out from this hole...
Then climb on further upstairs...
One could see the building which used to be the place for the princess to wash...
One could also see the river which in old times was beautifully decorated as part of the palace garden...
Di belakang pula kelihatan 'Kandang', sebuah binaan batu yang mengandungi makam Sultan Iskandar Thani (memerintah Aceh 1636-1641), seorang putera Pahang yang dijadikan anak angkat Sultan Iskandar Muda kemudian menantu kemudian penggantinya!
At the back or rear one could see a 'Kandang', a type of stone building containing the tomb of Sultan Iskandar Thani (ruled Aceh 1636-1641), a prince of Pahang who was made the adopted son of Sultan Iskandar Muda then his son-in-law then his successor!
This is the peak of Gunongan. It's fun climbing all the way to the top!
