Across the Perak river almost facing Sayong there lies the tomb of Daeng Selili, a Bugis king.

His highness came to Perak during the time of the 13th Sultan, Sultan Muzaffar Shah III (ruled 1728-1754). Daeng Selili is said to have become the Mufti (highest religious official) also the Sultan's private bodyguard. He married the Sultan's younger sister resulting in descendants who became the Maharajalela (something like the royal chamberlain) also Temenggung (something like the interior minister) of Perak.

Maybe not many people know who is Daeng Selili what more to have knowledge about his much bigger identity in the Bugis land (the Celebes). But I do believe most Malaysian citizens have heard the name Datuk Mahajalela Pandak Lam, a descendant of his highness who was responsible for killing the first English resident to Perak, J.W.W. Birch in the year 1875.

ReplyDeleteI wonder why didn't you mention that this Makam of Daeng Selili is located in Kg padang Changkat, Kuala Kangsar, Perak? I am pretty sure that's where the photos were taken. The kampung is not only famous for the makam, but also for Seni Tekatan Benang Emas & making golok, parang & keris.TQ
