Next we took a boat to Pulau (island of) Penyengat where lies this mosque.
Welcome to the main mosque of Sultan Riau.
It is understood the mosque was first built in the years 1760s before it was enlarged to become the present building 1832.
The building was strengthened by a mixture of cement and egg white.
This was made to happen during the time Raja Abdurrahman became the Yang dipertuan Muda Riau (1832-1844), a hereditary title given to the second most powerful person the Johor-Riau-Lingga empire. In his majesty's time the empire has been broken into two by the Dutch and English through the treaty of 1824. Due to respect for the ruler of the portion of empire under the Dutch who is also known as the Sultan (ruler of) Riau this mosque is called Masjid Raya (main mosque of) Sultan Riau.
