Makam seorang puteri di Bukit Treh? (Tomb of a princess at Bukit Treh?)

Assalamualaikum.
Peace be upon you. Let this be the 404th article in this blogspot...

At the foot of Bukit Treh, a small hill in Muar there lies this old tomb. It is said to belong to a royal princess who passed away here. As it is according to local tales, Bukit Treh originated from a ship which was cursed into stone. This happened when the owner of the ship, a rich merchant who rebelled when he refused to admit that a poor woman was his own real mother which he had left for a very long time.
The story is almost similar to the tale of Si Tanggang which is very famous in Malay literature. The owner of the ship is said to have many wives including a royal princess. Among the wives only the princess felt symphaty upon looking at the old woman who claimed the ship owner as her son. Still she also suffered from the curse which landed upon the whole content of the ship.
I myself just recently got a feeling that the person laid to rest here was indeed a royal princess but she had nothing to do with the curse brought upon the rebel son. This princess might be the daughter of a Sultan who ruled Muar once upon a time. Enough with these words...

Makam (Tomb of) Sheikh Abdul Jalil, Kota Blang, Samalanga

Dalam kawasan masjid terdapat makam seseorang bernama Sheikh Abdul Jalil.

Inside the mosque compound there lies the tomb of a person named Sheikh Abdul Jalil.

Laid to rest along with a few others, I could not find any reference to indicate who is the Sheikh Abdul Jalil in question. Still the locals did informed that the tomb is older than the mosque. This made me think is this the tomb of Sheikh Abdul Jalil father to a famous Aceh religious master of Bugis descent known as Daeng Mansur, a master said to be the father-in-law to Sultan Iskandar Muda?

Masjid (Mosque of ) Kota Blang, Samalanga

Commerating this night which has entered 17th of Ramadhan (of the Muslim Hijriah calender), the day for Nuzul Quran (the date when the first few verses were revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW), let us continue the story from Istana (Palace of) Ampon Sheikh Samalanga.

About 200 metres from the palace lies this mosque.

Welcome to the mosque of Kota Blang, the main mosque for Kota Blang (also pronounced as Kuta Blang or Koeta Blang) referring to this area which used to be the centre of rule for Samalanga.

This mosque was founded by Tun Sri Lanang (see Makam (Tomb of) Tun Sri Lanang) middle of the 17th century. Still it was renewed with this building about 200 years ago.

Istana (Palace of) Ampon Sheikh Samalanga

Continued from Makam (Tomb of) Tun Sri Lanang.

In an area besides the tomb there lies this building.

Ia adalah istana Ampon Sheikh Samalanga, pemerintah daerah Samalanga.
This is the palace of the Ampon Sheikh of Samalanga, ruler of the district of Samalanga.

Samalanga was a state considered a region under Aceh.

Just like at other states which were included in the kingdom of Aceh, it was ruled by a minor king who is called the Ampon Sheikh, also pronounced as Ampon Syik.

Tun Sri Lanang (rujuk balik Makam (Tomb of) Tun Sri Lanang) dilantik menjadi Ampon Sheikh pertama Samalanga hampir 400 tahun lalu.

Tun Sri Lanang (refer back to Makam (Tomb of) Tun Sri Lanang) ) was made the first Ampon Sheikh of Samalanga almost 400 years ago.

But I am not sure if this palace building was built during his time.

The post of Ampon Sheikh which was inherited by his descendants made it possible that this palace which is now not in use was built by later generation.

Whatever I was told that here indeed lies the palace when Tun Sri Lanang ruled, maybe it's just the building has been replaced by a newer one.

Makam (Tomb of) Tun Sri Lanang

Mari! :]
Let us return to Aceh for this blogspot's 400th article. Come! :]

In the district of Samalanga there exist the tomb of Tun Sri Lanang, a noble very famous for writing the book "Sulalatus Salatin", also known as "Sejarah Melayu" (The Malay Annals).

He was the Bendahara (something like an ancient prime minister) of Johor early 17th century but was captured and brought to Aceh along with with a number of nobles also royalties in fact the Sultan of the Johor-Riau empire himself... by Sultan Iskandar Muda who ruled Aceh 1607-1636.

Tun Sri Lanang kemudian diangkat untuk menjadi raja bahawan yang memerintah daerah (dahulu negeri) Samalanga lalu dipanggil Ampon Sheikh Samalanga.
Tun Sri Lanang was then raised to be a minor king ruling the district (used to be a state) of Samalanga and thus called the Ampon Sheikh of Samalanga.

It is a hereditary post inherited by his descendants here and so their tombs also exist near the tomb of Tun Sri Lanang.

A granddaughter of Tun Sri Lanang in turn married Sayyid Zainal Abidin from Aceh. A grandson of this Sayyid became the Bendahara of Johor named Tun Habib Abdul Majid of which the Bendahara's offsprings then became Sultans of Terengganu, Johor and Pahang until now. Look at these relevant old articles to know how this could happen...

Makam Tun Teja dan sedikit penerangan mengenai batu nesan Aceh (Tomb of Tun Teja and a bit of explanation on Aceh tombstones)

Tadi selepas melihat pertanyaan isteri di ruangan komen artikel Makam Puteri Bunian (Tomb of the elfin princess) saya pun mencari artikel tentang Tun Teja di blogspot ini. Ternyata saya pernah membuat satu artikel bertajuk Cerita (the story of) Tun Teja... hampir 3 tahun lalu. Tetapi itu lebih pada cerita tentang orangnya. Batu nesannya pula kurang kelihatan akibat diliputi kain kuning.
Just now after looking at a question posed by the wife in the comments section for the article Makam Puteri Bunian (Tomb of the elfin princess) I immediately searched for articles about Tun Teja in this blogspot. It is clear I did wrote an article called Cerita (the story of) Tun Teja... almost 3 years ago. But that was more on the person. The tombstones were not so visible because it was covered by yellow clothing.
Inilah dia... gambar-gambar diambil dari artikel On to the tomb of Tun Teja... di blogspot BERPETUALANG KE ACEH.
As such let a new article be made with clearer pictures based on a visit made in December 2009. This is it... pictures taken from the article On to the tomb of Tun Teja... in the blogspot BERPETUALANG KE ACEH.

Artikel Cerita (the story of) Tun Teja... sudah menjawab segalanya...
Who is Tun Teja and where is the location of the tomb do not need to be repeated. The article Cerita (the story of) Tun Teja... has answered all...

Instead let us straight have a look at the shape of the tombstone which is listed among what is called Aceh tombstones, from a type called by researchers as Othman type A. This list was prepared by Professor Othman Yatim, author of the book "Batu Aceh : Early Islamic gravestones in Peninsular Malaysia", a book of which its original contents was a PhD thesis. He said this shape is that of the earliest Aceh tombstones, used in the years 1400s AD.

Tentang persoalan isteri cuba mengaitkannya dengan batu nesan Puteri Bunian saya dapati ia tiada kena-mengena. Batu nesan Tun Teja sebenarnya serupa dengan batu nesan Sultan Pahang pertama dari keturunan Melaka. Lihat Makam (tomb of) Sultan Muhammad Shah, Pahang.... . Batu nesan Puteri Bunian pula serupa dengan batu nesan Sultan Malikus Salih di Aceh. Lihat Makam (tomb of) Sultan Malikus Salih!

Regarding the wife's question in trying to relate it to the tombstones of Puteri Bunian I find that it has no relation. The tombstones of Tun Teja are actually similar to the tombstone of Pahang's first Sultan from the linage of Melaka. Look at Makam (tomb of) Sultan Muhammad Shah, Pahang... . The tombstones of Puteri Bunian in turn is similar to the tombstones of Sultan Malikus Salih in Aceh. Look at Makam (tomb of) Sultan Malikus Salih!.

Although the type of tombstones mentioned by Professor Othman as being of type C here is said to have been built in the years 1500s, it is installed at the tomb of Sultan Malikus Salih when he passed away in 1297 AD. Maybe it was installed later? That is why the tombstones of Sultan Malikus Salih are famous as being the earliest tombstones which have the date of death of the Sultan inscribed. It's not that there were no earlier Sultans using Aceh tombstones but the dates were not written. Then there are those who have lived earlier and their tombstones are inscribed with the dates of death but they were not rulers.

Namun pemerhatian saya sendiri menunjukkan sesetengahnya memang milik orang lelaki, misalnya batu nesan Aceh yang kelihatan seperti tombol pintu bersegi lapan.

One more thing that should be mentioned about Aceh tombstones are its relationship to the gender of the deceased. According to Professor Othman, the shapes of the tombstones could not absolutely indicate whether the owner is male or female. This could be seen in the tombstones of Tun Teja (female) and tombstones of Sultan Muhammad Shah Pahang (male) which is similar. Still my own observations show that some indeed belong to men, for example Aceh tombstones which looks like octagonal doorknobs.

Me myself am more interested in Aceh tombstones with wings. Quite a number of people are mistaken in saying tombstones with wings belong to females when it is clear Sultan Malikus Salih, a man uses tombstones with wings. Problem arises as there are also tombstones for females which look similar. My own obsevation in turn shows, if it belongs to a female tombstones with wings would have longer neck and head section.

Tetapi tanpa dirancang, makam Tun Teja pula mengambil perhatian.

For information this is the 399th article in this blogspot. Originally I thought that a new article about the tomb of Tun Sri Lanang which is only waiting for time to be written would take that position. But without any planning, the tomb of Tun Teja in turn caught attention.

Sekitar 300 meter dari makam Sheikh Fadhil Banten terdapat makam Sheikh Abdullah Sabihu dan isteri.

Some 300 metres from the tomb of Sheikh Fadhil Banten there exist the tomb of Sheikh Abdullah Sabihu and wife.

According to the stories he came from Pasai in Aceh some 150-200 years ago to preach religion. He opened the area of Lenga and is thus known as Moyang (great grandfather of) Lenga.

Continued from the article Masjid jamek (Main mosque of) Lenga.

In front of the main mosque of Lenga lies this tomb which stands out.

Written is the name of the owner Haji Fadhil from Banten, also known as Sheikh or Kiyai (both are titles for religious masters) Fadhil Banten, born 1870 AD and passed away 1950.

Also written is the name Sultan Ibrahim, ruler of the state of Johor (1895-1959) for building this tomb. For information his majesty used to study under Sheikh Fadhil Banten. Maybe that is why the main mosque of Lenga is rather beautifully built although Lenga is a town which is very small?
