Ahad 23 Mac 2014. Tidak lama selepas mendarat di lapangan terbang Sultan Iskandar Muda, Banda Aceh saya singgah di kawasan pemakaman ini.

Sunday 23rd March 2014. Not long after landing at the Sultan Iskandar Muda airport, Banda Aceh I stopped by at this tomb area.

Ia adalah kawasan pemakaman keluarga pembesar Aceh lama yang dipanggil Maharajalela, atau lebih tepat Maharajalela Melayu. Letaknya tidak jauh dari lapangan terbang tetapi baru kini saya tersedar.

It is the family tomb area of the olden Aceh official called the Maharajalela, or to be more exact the Maharajalela Melayu. It is positioned not far from the airport but it was only this time I noticed it.

Setakat yang saya tahu jawatan Maharajalela wujud di Aceh sejak tahun 1600an.

As far as I know the position of Maharajalela has existed in Aceh since the year 1600s.

Pada tahun 1727, seorang Maharajalela bernama Ahmad telah diangkat menjadi Sultan Aceh. Bermulalah apa yang dipanggil Raja-raja Aceh Dinasti Bugis. Lihat artikel lama Makam Raja-raja Dinasti Bugis (the tomb of kings from the Bugis dynasty).

In the year 1727, a Maharajalela named Ahmad was elevated to become the Sultan (ruler) of Aceh. So started what is called Raja-raja Aceh Dinasti Bugis (kings of Aceh from the Bugis dynasty). Look at the old article Makam Raja-raja Dinasti Bugis (the tomb of kings from the Bugis dynasty).

Seterusnya kami mencari makam seorang peneroka awal Pulau Pinang yang dikenali sebagai Dato' Keramat. Kami diberitahu ia terletak di tanah perkuburan Islam di Jalan Perak, dalam bandar raya Georgetown.

Next we went looking for the tomb of an early settler of Pulau Pinang who is known as Dato' Keramat. We were told that it is located within the Muslim cemetery area at Jalan Perak, within the city of Georgetown.

Kalau tak salah ia adalah tanah perkuburan tertua di Pulau Pinang. Batu-batu nesan yang sangat rapat menunjukkan beberapa generasi penduduk telah disemadikan di sini sehingga kubur jadi berlapis-lapis.

If not mistaken this is the oldest cemetery in Pulau Pinang. The tombstones which are very close to each other shows many generations of the population have been laid to rest here such that the graves are layered.

Dato' Keramat dikatakan seorang pemimpin masyarakat dari Aceh yang sangat dihormati. Maka itu makam beliau didirikan terserlah.

Dato' Keramat is said to be a very respected community leader from Aceh. Thus his tomb is erected to stand out.

Ada yang kata beliau telah membuka penempatan di Pulau Pinang seawal tahun 1705, hampir seabad sebelum wakil British, Francis Light datang mengambil-alih kekuasaan 1786.

There are those who said he opened settlement in Pulau Pinang as early as the year 1705, almost a century before British representative, Francis Light came to take over power 1786.

It is the main mosque of Teluk Bahang.

Namanya Masjid at-Takwa, Balik Pulau.

Its name is Masjid (mosque of) at-Takwa, Balik Pulau.

Satu lagi masjid yang dilawati hari itu adalah Masjid al-Qadri di Air Itam.

Another mosque visited that day is the mosque of al-Qadri at Air Itam.

Ia katanya dibina oleh seorang keturunan Nabi Muhammad SAW.

It is said to have been built by someone descended from Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Sampai masa untuk solat Jumaat saya pergi ke masjid ini.

Come the time for the Jumaat (compulsory congregational) prayers I went to this mosque.

Ia adalah masjid negeri Pulau Pinang.

It is the state mosque of Pulau Pinang.

Di halaman sisi masjid terdapat pokok besar ini.

At the side compound of the mosque lies this big tree.

Di bawahnya terdapat sejumlah makam lama.

Underneath it there exists a number of old tombs.

Kelihatan juga ada batu nesan terpacak di pangkal pokok.

Could be seen a tombstone standing out from the base of the tree.

Mustahil makam orang Islam didirikan di dalam pokok. Ini membayangkan pokok masih kecil atau belum wujud ketika makam dibuat.

It is impossible for the tomb of a Muslim person to be erected inside a tree. This gives the suggestion that the tree was still small or did not exist when the tomb was built.

Maka melihat pada saiz dan ketinggian pokok saya anggarkan makam itu berusia lebih 300 tahun.

Thus looking at the size and height of the tree I estimate the tomb to be more than 300 years old.
