Bukit China (the Chinese Hill), Melaka...

Malam ini saya terasa ingin berkongsi sedikit gambar ketika memanjat Bukit Cina di Melaka.
Tonight, I feel like sharing some pictures from a climb up Bukit China (literally translated as the Chinese Hill) in mid-town Melaka.

This trip was made last 4th November. I myself am not sure if I ever climbed up this hill although when I was small, before the PLUS North-South highway existed, I always passed through its foothill everytime on the trip from Muar (my mother's hometown) to Kuala Lumpu and vice versa.

Whatever, I want to clear the doubts. So on one fine day, after spending a night in Pulau Besar, Melaka, me and a friend went to Bukit Cina and climbed up to see what's there...

Dalam perjalanan, kami ternampak binaan-binaan kenit ini...

Along the way, we saw this miniature thingies...

Lihat... Sila lihat Liliputian midget in Pulau Besar, Melaka!

Look... Miniature models of Dutch buildings available in Melaka city... Forgot the name. Looking at this, I immediately joked to the friend... "Here is a place where midgets stay!" I said. Who would have thought upon returning to Kuala Lumpur that night, we found a picture of a midget accidently snapped while at Pulau Besar! Have a look at Liliputian midget in Pulau Besar, Melaka!

Kami terus berjalan ke atas...

We went all the way up...

On top was a kind of plateu overlooking the city of Melaka. There is a plaque saying something about the history of the hill starting in the 19th Century AD. I don't remember the exact details but it did mention something about the hill belonging to a certain Chinese association. That's why there's so many graves there belonging to major personalities from the association.

For me, there's something not right here. As far as I know, the hill was named Bukit (hill of) Cina (China) because it was granted by Sultan (king) Mansur Shah (ruled Melaka around 1420-1430 AD if I'm not mistaken) to the followers from Cina who accompanied Princess Hang Li Po. The Princess of a Chinese emperor was said to have embraced Islam and married the Sultan of Melaka and so the followers too embraced Islam.

This is the story accepted by many as written in the book Sulalatus Salatin or the Malay Annals authored by Bendahara (something like the Prime Minister) Tun Sri Lanang in the 17th Centurt AD. I on the other hand have a certain reason to believe that Princess Hang Li Po and her entourage were already Muslims! This is because Cina then was under the rule of the Ming Dynasty and I have reason to believe that the rulers and nobles of the dynasty were Muslims although the subjects might not be.

Whatever, there should be many remains of Muslim graves at Bukit Cina but it seems there's none to be seen. What happened? Is it among pieces of Malay history that wants to be erased by certain parties?

Thank God there's some remains of Islam at Bukit Cina but at the foothills. Can you see the mosque at the bottom of the picture? Next to it are some ancient Muslim graves.

Selain memliki banyak kuburan Cina, Bukit Cina menjadi tempat untuk ramai warga Cina bersenam dan membuat aktiviti rekreasi...

Beside having many Chinese graves, Bukit Cina is a place for many Chinese citizens to exercise and do recreational activities...

Sekian!

My actual reason for visiting Bukit Cina is to look for the tomb of a Malay warrior said to exist there. Too bad I couldn't find it... Who is this warrior? I will mention it in a story in the blogspot CATATAN SI MERAH SILU ya. That's all!

Pemandangan sekitar kelab golf tinggal di Pulau Besar (views around the abandoned golf club at Pulau Besar)

Assalamualaikum semua. Teruskan membaca...
Greetings all. If my last posting here, Sedikit citarasa Itali di Pulau Besar? (A bit of Italian taste in Pulau Besar?) was made to commemorate the date 13 November 2007 or 13/11/2007, the posting this time is made for today's date equivalent to 13 Zulkaedah 1428 Hijriah... Or 13/11/1428, still with elements of the number 131 which is my home sweet home number. Continue reading...

This is part of the abandoned luxury apartment complex at Pulau Besar as featured in the previous story. From this area, you can climb up the higher part of the hill to reach a more interesting place...

After walking about 100 metres from that part of the apartments, there appears another building which looks ruined...

Although it is ruined, the building still have a very interesting viewing tower...

Oh... Lupa hendak beritahu.

Oh... Forgot to mention. The building which has been abandoned for years is the Pulau Besar golf club building. It is situated on the second highest peak in Pulau Besar...

Lihat, pemandangan daripada atas menara tinjau tadi. Cantik bukan?

Look, the view from the viewing tower. Beautiful isn't it? If I'm, not mistaken, the view is headed exactly north. In view is the city of Melaka in the back background. The island in the picture is known as Pulau Hantu (the ghost island!) while the luxury apartments built in Pulau Besar faces the island. No wonder it didn't went well!

Ini pula pemandangan menghala ke timur laut...

This is the view heading north-east...

The view south-east shows the golfing area (if I'm not mistaken, 18 holes) of Pulau Besar which covers almost half the size of the island. It has not been used long since the golf club went out of use. Still, there's some benefit from the building of the lawn. At least you can walk around Pulau Besar easier without having to jungle trek all the time!

This is the highest peak in Pulau Besar, seen from the golf club viewing tower. Up on top is a very unique place. The story is in Batu Belah (split stone) of Pulau Besar, Melaka .

Sekian!

This is the golf club seen from the hillside while climbing the highest peak in Pulau Besar. That's all!

Sedikit citarasa Itali di Pulau Besar? (A bit of Italian taste in Pulau Besar?)

Sila!
Today, on 13th of November or 13/11 which has a certain meaning to me, I feel like making the number of postings in this blogspot a total of 77. And so let me present here some pictures taken at Pulau Besar, Melaka more than a week ago. Come!

From certain angles at Pulau Besar, one could see a view which is rather weird for this island... Weird because the island which size at most could be slightly more than a square mile does not have much modern infrastructures... Suddenly there appear a group of buildings which look like five star apartments!

When one gets near, it is apparent the buildings here is in a class of its own... Going inside made one feels like being in Italy! In fact the first time I went walkabout here some 5 years ago, the name Tivoli Villa at the Damansara Heights area, Kuala Lumpur immediately came to mind... Tivoli Villa was once considered as the most prestigious apartments while the buildings in Pulau Besar seemed like almost of the same class!

Lihat bangunan-bangunan ini... Bukan calang-calang! Sayangnya ia tidak berpenghuni... Beginilah keadaannya sejak saya pertama kali melihatnya 5 tahun lalu. Menurut penduduk tempatan Pulau Besar, begini juga keadaannya ketika ia siap, kalau tak salah ingatan lebih 10 tahun lalu!
Look at these buildings... This is no child's play! Too bad it is not populated... This was the condition since I first saw it 5 years ago. According to locals of Pulau Besar, this was also the condition when it was first completed, if memory serves me right more than 10 years ago!

Tiba-tiba sahaja muncul satu makhluk aneh di hadapan! Ah?

Suddenly there appears a strange creature in front! Ah? Is this a type of fairy creature said to exist by large numbers in Pulau Besar, an island full of mystery?

Hehe! Jangan takut...

Haha! Don't be scared... That is my friend Zaidi. But don't be surprised if suddenly there appears invisible (or weird) beings like and later proven to be not human. According to the tales, there's many such beings of many types in this island!

According to those who know, that's why this project doesn't quite lift off. Tens, maybe hundreds of millions of Ringgit have been spent to built this group of luxury apartments at Pulau Besar. But there's some kind of force stopping it from succeding... Some sort of invisible disturbances which could scare people.

Said the locals, well it's quite good that this project (and a some other big projects suggested, in fact some already built in Pulau Besar) didn't make it. Or else, most likely it will bring all sorts of bad behaviour normally synonymous with modern living of the rich at luxury apartments allegedly representing the height of human nature... Bad behaviours such as drinking, free mixtures between male and female and thus fornication...

Pulau Besar is known by many because of the existence of many ancient tombs said to belong to pure souls of saintly status. Development can be invited but let it be in line with purity of the heart. Those who understand, understand what I mean, That's all, the 77th posting for this blogspot!

Makam (tomb of) Baginda Ali

Today, I feel like talking a bit about a king named Sultan Ali or more well-known as Baginda (his majesty) Ali. This is it...

In Umbai, Melaka, beside the old Muar to Melaka road some 15km from the city of Melaka lies a yellow-coloured mosque with a big tomb building of the same colour standing out right in front...

Lihat... Bangunan makamnya begitu terserlah...

Look... The tomb building does stand out...

Next to it is a plaque with some information on the person buried in the tomb which is Sultan Ali...

For information, Sultan Ali is the last sultan (or king) of the Johor-Riau-Lingga empire from the descendants of Bendahara (something like the Prime Minister of) Melaka which became the Bendahara Johor. The empire begin to be shattered by Western colonialists through the English-Dutch Treaty of 1824.

As it is, the empire was the continuation of the Melaka empire after the government centre at the city of Melaka was seized by the Portuguese 1511. Sultan Mahmud Shah of Melaka ran after losing the war to become the first Johor-Riau-Lingga empire ruler, followed by his son, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah whose mother is a daughter of the Bendahara.

The blood of the kings of Melaka who became the rulers of the Johor-Riau-Lingga empire ends with the demise of Sultan Mahmud Mangkat DiJulang (the one who died while being carried on a pedestal) middle of the 17 Century AD. And so the Bendahara was promoted to become the new Sultan and his offsprings continued to rule.

The English-Dutch Treaty of 1824 was signed while the father to Sultan Ali which Sultan Hussin ruled. After that, the empire started to visibly split with its tributary states starting to free itself and local administrators raising themselves up as kings!

Sultan Ali was forced to a corner when Temenggung (something like the chief of police or internal affairs minister) Abu Bakar who held Johor declared himself as Maharaja (emperor of) Johor. Meanwhile Pahang which is ruled by Bendahara also wanted to be independent and the Bendahara then which is Bendahara Wan Ahmad raised himself up as Sultan Ahmad.

As it is, the Temenggung and Bendahara Pahang also descended from the old Bendahara Johor who then became the Sultan. But Sultan Ali could be said to be the last Sultan from the Bendahara dynasty who ruled Johor as the Temenggung and Bendahara came from siblings of the old Sultan considered to be less qualified to hold the highest command of the empire.

Sekian!

Shift of current events then which were largely supported by the English colonialists caused Sultan Ali's sovereignity to be limited to the area of Kesang situated north of Muar and south of Melaka before his majesty died and was buried in this mosque area in Umbai. And so he left as a legacy of old with the stories of what happened in his era to be considered and taken as lessons for the current generation. That's all!

Cerita (Story of) Tun Teja...

Nota: Jika tulisan pada gambar-gambar yang tertera terlalu kecil untuk dibaca, sila right-click pada gambar yang mahu dilihat kemudian open in new window ya...

Note: If the writings on the pictures shown is too small for reading, do right-click at the picture you want to see and then open it in a new window ya...

Me feels, many Malaysians have heard the name Tun Teja, the beautiful woman in old Malay stories said to have been brought away by the legendary well-known warrior Hang Tuah to be presented to the Sultan (king of) Melaka about 600 years ago. The name itself is enough to give some sort of vibes to carry one back to think about some old days of bygone era.

Last week in a short trip around Melaka, I had the time to visit the tomb of Tun Teja within a padi field in Merlimau. Today, I feel like showing some of the pictures taken along with the accompanying story. This is it...

As it is at the tomb, there's enough sign-boards to explain the story. And I actually feel quite lazy to elaborate... So where relevant, let dear readers just follow the story provided by the authorities ya...

Rasanya ini cukup untuk memulakan langkah...

Me feels this is enough to begin...

Perjalanan untuk ke makam...

The walk towards the tomb...

Itu dia... Terdapat cukup papan-tanda di sana...

There... There's enough signboards everywhere...

Sebuah perigi lama di sisi...

And old well besides...

Makam Tun Teja...

The tomb of Tun Teja... Next, just read the stories which appeared below ya...

Mungkin terjemahan dalam Bahasa Inggeris nya ada sedikit kecatatan tetapi rasanya cukuplah sekadar supaya orang tahu apakah yang menyebabkan nama Tun Teja cukup terkenal di kalangan orang Melayu...

Maybe the English translation is a bit lousy but me feels it is enough to make people know why the name Tun Teja is so well-known among the Malays...

Sila lihat Perak trip of September 2006... A look at the tombs... . Sekian ya...

The tombstone of Tun Teja seen up close. The Aceh-type tombstone is almost the same as that at the tomb of Tok Temong in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Do visit Perak trip of September 2006... A look at the tombs... .That's all ya...

Jeram di tengah kota (Ravine in mid city)

This is a picture of the meeting of two rivers (don't know the names) beside the Putra World Trade Centre building in Kuala Lumpur. I was moved to take this picture and put it in this page because of the nostalgic feelings which suddenly came upon seeing it.
When I was around 18 (I'm now 37-years-old!), I often "played" around this area, also around Chow Kit. Then, the rivers in KL were considered very dirty, so the cleaning and beautification process were just starting, one of the ways by building concrete river-banks and putting stones and boulders to create ravines such as seen in the picture.
Itulah ceritanya...
It's been long since I passed this area... All this while, I only looked from afar when walking towards The Mall shopping complex. But one day a week ago, I felt the urge to walk along this section of the river with ravinces and took this picture. So there...

Teks untuk Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Text for Nostalgia of the Muar river)

OK... Dua minggu lalu saya telah membuat satu posting gambar bertajuk Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Nostalgia of the Muar river) tanpa menyertakan cerita kerana kesuntukan masa. Sekarang biar saya sertakan ceritanya ya...
OK... Two weeks ago I made a posting of pictures titled Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Nostalgia of the Muar river) without including the story because of lack of time. Now let me include the story ya..

Biar saya berterus-terang. Maka inilah dia...
Let me be frank. Actually, lately I felt very lazy to tell stories as I feel so tired working on things related to the publishing of my third book "Berpetualang ke Aceh: Sirih Pulang ke Gagang?" ("The trip to Aceh: The prodigal son returns?" or so) or BKA III. But the story-telling must continue. So here it is...

As it is, the picture postings made two weeks ago was done while at a Cyber-Cafe near the Pekeliling bus station in Kuala Lumpur after missing the 6 o'clock bus heading for Raub. Then, I planned to go to Kampung Janda Baik, Pahang but I actually missed the bus 3 times and spent the night in Kajang. Only the next day did I go to Janda Baik and spent the night there.

Actually, I want to talk about the nostalgic moments felt whenever I sat beside the Muar river. I was born in 1970 in the town of Muar and the house I grew up at until my teenage years was situated about half a kilometre from the estuary of the biggest and longest river in southern Peninsular Malaysia. So I often spent the afternoon resting beside the river while enjoying the nice breeze.

Hmm...
Hmm... It seems I am actually too lazy to continue story-telling but forced myself for the sake of continuity in this blogspot before other stories could be added. So methinks enough if it is said, once upon a time to me, the Muar river felt like the biggest river in the world. Before I went out travelling further and saw other rivers the same size of bigger around the Peninsular such as the Perak and Pahang rivers.

In fact I've seen Europe's big rivers such as the Thames in London, Danube in Austria and Reine in Germany from many angles. Still the Muar river feels very special to me. Maybe because of the times spent as a youth beside it... Maybe also because of the ancient history related to some events before the opening of the state of Melaka 600 years ago which happened at some locations around?

Apapun, gambar-gambar yang diletakkan di bawah posting bertajuk Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Nostalgia of the Muar river) itu diambil berdekatan Kampung Bukit Treh sekitar 7km daripada kuala. Maka ia bukan bahagian sungai yang terlebar... Sekian.
Whatever, the pictures put under the posting titled Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Nostalgia of the Muar river) were taken nearby Kampung (village of) Bukit Treh some 7km from the estuary. So it is not the widest portion of the river... That's all!

Nostalgia Sungai Muar (Nostalgia of the Muar river)

Note: I'm actually running out of time as I must travel to a certain place. But there came the urge to put a few pictures here with the story to be made after I return to Kuala Lumpur ya...
